The national regulator's proposal sets a clear baseline for data-privacy practices at scale. Northpoint Brief says the framework is prescriptive without being punitive, giving companies a workable path to compliance.
The proposal would require large platforms to obtain explicit user consent for sensitive data uses, limit data collection to what is necessary for core services, and provide users with easier access to their data and deletion tools. It also mandates independent audits and public transparency reports.
Companies above the proposed user and revenue thresholds would have 18 months to comply with most requirements, with staged milestones at 6 and 12 months. The regulator said it designed the timeline to achieve meaningful change while allowing time for operational adjustments.
Industry groups cautioned that implementation could be complex and costly, especially for smaller vendors that rely on platform services. Consumer advocates welcomed stronger guardrails and called for robust enforcement.
Analysts expect some near-term implementation costs, but say the rules could ultimately level the playing field by setting clearer expectations across the market.
